File Name Conventions and Available Software
Students will be expected to supply their own portable data storage devices for use during the Advanced Integrated Laboratories.
All documents will be submitted in electronic format through VISTA. All document files submitted by students must follow file-naming conventions. The general format for file names will be
UCA_semester_documenttype_assignmentnumber_version
Document types are
- N electronic notebook
- P plan of procedure
- R lab report
- B book report
- CV curriculum vita
- C critique of strengths and weaknesses
- CL cover letter
- O documentation of outcomes
For example, Robert Sweeney’s second submission of the lab report for project 2 in Fall 2006 would have the file name
rsweeney_F06_R_2_v2.doc
Software:
Numerous computers are available for student use in Hunt Haught Hall. Room 101 computer lab has computers for student use, Room 202 (General Chemistry laboratory) has 8 computers that are available for upper-level students when the general chemistry labs are not in session, Room 201 has several computers, Rooms 204/6/8 have computers controlling most of the instruments that are also available for other uses, and Room 210A hosts the two SGI UNIX machines.

- Mathcad (advanced mathematical software including calculus)
- Logger Pro for Windows (data acquisition and analysis)
- Graphical Analysis for Windows (spreadsheet, analysis, graphing)
- Microsoft Word, Paint, PowerPoint
- Excel (spreadsheet, graphing, not really designed for scientific data analysis)
- Chem Draw (chemical structure drawing program)
- Spartan (molecular modeling and calculational software)
- Journal of Chemical Education software (see Dr. Harvey for a list)
- Photoshop Elements 2.0 (image manipulation)
